taxpayers, citizens and members of civil society who are concerned about projects funded by International Financial Institutions (IFIs) and the impact those projects have on the natural and social environment.

lobby:
local government officials and IFI officials and staff in support of CEE Bankwatch Network campaigns by writing letters and emails, attending public consultations, meetings and submitting letters to the editor to local newspapers.

Active Bankwatchers History

We launched Active Bankwatchers in September 2002, to coincide with the World Bank and IMF meetings in Washington, DC. The World Bank/IMF aren't our only targets, though.

The main aim of Active Bankwatchers is to increase public involvement in reforming International Financial institutions - especially the World Bank (WB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The IFIs think nobody is watching them. We want to let them know that we are here and that ordinary people are watching what they do.

Over the past months, Active Bankwatchers have helped to stop World Bank financing for high voltage transmission lines in Kazakhstan, to fight against EIB and EBRD funding for destructive post-war reconstruction in Georgia, and to tell the EIB to end its dirty energy lending practices.
