ODG organised a series of talks and sessions in connection with a reading group of the book ‘Collapse. Terminal capitalism, ecosocial transition and ecofascism’ by Carlos Taibo. In a context of intersecting crises in which transitions based on the energy, technology and digital and transport sectors are mostly being unfolded by institutions and corporations, the aim of the discussions was to address the different dimensions of collapse, from the analysis of the concept, to coping strategies and technical evidence, to a more emotional part of how we deal with its consequences. The specific aim of the talk was to open a dialogue to address the current evidence of the collapse we are already experiencing and the paths towards a just transition in a sufficiency scenario.
In the first part of the session, which was attended by 134 people (of which one was not living in the EU), there was a presentation by the author of the book and in the second part, an open round of questions. The moderation of the session ensured that there was equal participation of men and women. The participants expressed that the reading group was useful to carry out an exercise of collective reflection, listening and debate on desirable proposals in a context of intersecting crises. The event provided a good opportunity for members of the reading group to meet the author of the book ‘Collapse. Terminal capitalism, ecosocial transition and ecofascism’ and discuss its main arguments.
The session took place on a day of international climate mobilisation and ended with a joint action uniting different entities and civil society activists.
