COP24 showtime — Berlin unflinching on NS2 — G19 stick to Paris

3 December 2018, POLITICO Pro Morning Energy and Climate

— Just transition day: Today, Polish President Andrzej Duda will receive some 40 national leaders, and invite them to sign a “just transition declaration.” According to a draft, leaders should “ensure a decent future” for workers, which is “crucial to ensure public support” for decarbonization. NGOs say that Poland should do as it preaches, by taking the opportunity to wean off coal and invest in clean energy. Instead, they highlight, Poland’s new energy strategy to 2040 still plans to derive 60 percent of its energy from coal by 2030, and to drastically reduce onshore wind power. The just transition declaration is “in clear contradiction” with the Polish government’s energy policy, including “over-reliance on coal for decades to come,” said Alexandru Mustață from Bankwatch.
