On 10 June, the Debt Observatory in Globalization held a meeting between international networks and activists from different fields to discuss the relationship between debt and the current moment, the different struggles and how it is present in our daily lives.
Specifically, the following issues were discussed: the global debt situation and how the new recovery funds set up after the pandemic could possibly generate a new austerity scenario; the relationship between climate emergency and the process of indebtedness; the main consequences of the European green and digital transition and recovery; debt in everyday life and gender and colonial debts; and how debt can be related to the struggles for the climate and for the defense of life and territories.
All these questions were addressed during four conversations between ten international speakers with different profiles (plus four moderators), on an event attended by 68 people (of which 65 were living in the EU). Simultaneous interpretation was provided in Spanish and English. The four talks took the format of a round table opening up participation to the public through questions and interventions from the audience at the end of each round table.
The invited speakers (which can be consulted here) came from different countries and had as well different backgrounds. This diversity of speakers generated interest and attracted a large and diverse audience.
The aim of the event was to understand debt not as something that happens at the macroeconomic level but as something that affects the everyday life of the population and that is related to the climate emergency. Furthermore, that debt can not only occur in monetary terms but also in ecological, gender and colonial terms. For this reason, it is essential to establish mechanisms of public scrutiny to guarantee responsible public financing and fair taxation in a green, feminist and decolonial key.
