Community advocates around the world are sounding the alarm about growing threats to the independence of accountability mechanisms attached to international financial institutions and other development agencies. These ‘independent accountability mechanisms’ (IAMs) are designed to facilitate access to justice for communities harmed by projects financed by these institutions, but too often their work has been hampered by undue influence from the management of their parent institutions.

Along with more than twenty organisations that support communities in bringing complaints to IAMs, Bankwatch sent an open letter about these concerns to the Independent Accountability Mechanism Network (IAMnet), a membership network designed to facilitate knowledge sharing and cooperation among IAMs.
