The EBRD and EIB’s Sustainable Municipal Infrastructure Investments in the Western Balkans and Eastern Neighbourhood
Briefing | 26 May 2020
The latest research on climate change indicates that changes to urban life have the potential to make a substantial contribution to reducing emissions, consumption, and land use. International financial institutions have addressed this by providing much-needed funding for the implementation, upgrade, and expansion of infrastructure in municipalities. However, the real impact of the investments on sustainability, especially in terms of the environment and human rights, is still not clear.
From October to December 2019, Bankwatch conducted research on CSOs’ perceptions of the impact that such investments have had on local communities in the Western Balkans and Eastern Neighbourhood. The findings of this research indicate that the EBRD and EIB have significant work to do to ensure their investments in municipal infrastructure meet sustainability and human rights criteria.
