This new report reviews the company’s environmental and social impacts during the years 2008-2009 since the coalition Global Action on ArcelorMittal published its first report on the company in May 2008. The new report includes case studies from Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, India, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Romania and South Africa.

This report reviews the European Investment Bank’s public-private partnership (PPP) projects to inform and help shape the bank’s lending policies and practices. The research has been commissioned by the European Investment Bank but is not available on the EIB’s website. The report describes the EIB PPP portfolio, presents the outcomes of interviews with EIB staff involved in PPP operations. The report draws interesting conclusions about the PPP project selection, risk sharing and transparency.

Even before the current economic crisis there were clear signs that the transition to a market economy in central and eastern Europe, which the EBRD is mandated to promote, is coming with a high social price tag attached. The EBRD’s own survey on transition in 2007 – at the height of the boom times – included the alarming finding from 29,000 respondents across the region that trust in society had plummeted since 1989.

We are particularly concerned about the inadequate appraisal of environmental risks connected with the Turany – Hubova section of the D1 motorway in Slovakia, the damage so far and further potential impacts on the Natura 2000 sites and habitats of Community importance. We are convinced that the underestimation of environmental risks has led to insufficient mitigation measures resulting in a recent damage to a nature reserve by preparatory construction works.

The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) gives countries outside the EU the perspective and opportunity to move beyond cooperation to a significant degree of integration. But when it comes to the eastern European neighbourhood partner countries, the assumption that political and social rights will flow and develop as an automatic consequence of economic liberalisation, is only that – an assumption.

‘Carbon Rising’, a new study from Bankwatch, catalogues the EIB’s energy lending for the period 2007-2010 during which time the bank loaned EUR 40 billion to energy projects across the EU and EUR 8 billion outside the EU. This lending was guided by the EIB’s first energy policy ‘Clean Energy for Europe: A Reinforced EIB Contribution’, adopted by the bank in 2007.
