Letter to European Commission: Insufficient environmental assessment of Ukraine NPP Safety Upgrade Programme
Advocacy letter | 20 January 2012
The letter criticises the environmental assessment of the Nuclear power plants safety upgrade programme (SUP) in Ukraine. It concludes that the assessment insufficient and does not fully elaborate the objectives and consequences of the SUP.
It stresses that any decision to support the nuclear industry should be based on a meaningful strategic assessment of the industry and as well its further development plans, while at the same time accounting for the potential consequences of such involvement and the sponsor’s ability and readiness to take responsibility and address issues like spent fuel treatment and reactor decommissioning.
The European Commission, Directorate-General for Energy has replied to our letter on February 28, 2012. Download their response as pdf.
