EU biodiversity credits – barking up the wrong tree
Briefing | 7 July 2025
This briefing provides an overview of biodiversity credits, offsets and nature markets, EU plans and issues with biodiversity credits.
It also presents Bankwatch’s view on priorities to mobilise financing for nature. Biodiversity credits are in danger of being a massive distraction from other more effective strategies to improve the state of nature. The evidence does not suggest that biodiversity credits are needed, or that they are superior to other, simpler solutions. Credible proposals and examples of how to ensure effective measuring, monitoring, use of certificates and market governance are also lacking.
