Dubious COVID help: who keeps an eye on Czech state guarantees to big companies?

The Czech state-owned insurance company EGAP has secured a loan of CZK 2 billion from state COVID aid for Liberty Ostrava that is closely connected to Greensil, a company plagued by a corruption scandal.

The Czech Republic’s COVID Plus programme will provide billions for large exporters, but is not subject to any regulation or supervision. The state should be able to explain which projects it supports and why, but EGAP remains silent on its dubious investments.

We continue to question the Czech government’s COVID-19 recovery aid to big polluters such as Liberty Steel Ostrava, whose owner is on the brink of bankruptcy. The case is yet another example of the insufficient transparency and accountability of export credit agencies (ECAs).
