Against the backdrop of COP25 in Madrid, monoindustrial communities understand best the need for a just transition from coal to the low carbon economy. Each region is unique, but what they have in common is a great potential to grow. What can be learned from ambitious regions? How can just transition be integrated in global climate action?
The speakers will focus on progress towards just transition in various communities, including from Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and Turkey, with discussants from other countries contributing. The role of IFIs in supporting the just transition will be discussed.
Progress on just transition in the EU during 2019 will be addressed, including introducing the just transition fund and discussion of the role of the platform for coal regions in transition.
