National Ecological Centre of Ukraine (NECU) was one of the first nation-wide non-governmental organizations created after the restoration of Ukrainian statehood in 1991. It has 20 local branches throughout Ukraine. NECU’s mission is to work for the creation of a sound environment, on the formation of an ecologically conscious civil society, the implementation of the principles of the eco-imperative and the ecosystem approach and to improve the quality of people’s lives in Ukraine.
NECU’s experts have been actively involved in the development of Ukrainian environmental and nature protecting legislation, the drafting of a number of state programs and the establishment of many protected areas in Ukraine. NECU is also active in promoting sustainable energy production, and continues to oppose the expansion of the nuclear industry in Ukraine.
NECU is an active participant in the Ukrainian NGOs Working Group on Climate Change and the Ukrainian Rivers Network. At the international level, NECU is a member of the CEE Bankwatch Network and Transport and Environment (T&E), is a focal point of Global Relief International in Ukraine, and collaborates with other environmental NGOs nationally and internationally. NECU implements international projects aimed at environmental protection in Ukraine, including in cooperation with EU/EaP countries.
