Joint civil society letter to the European Commission on the RED Recommendation

Joint civil society letter to the European Commission on the RED Recommendation

Letter    |    25 June 2024

Although a rapid transformation to an energy-efficient, 100 per cent renewable energy system is very much needed, tackling the climate emergency must go hand in hand with tackling the biodiversity crisis.

40 civil society organisations underlined in this joint letter that the European Commission must revise ill-advised plans to undermine nature protection rules for renewable energy projects – including hydropower and biomass – under the Energy Community Treaty.

Renewable energy development must succeed, but it must avoid damaging nature, and it must have public buy-in. For this reason, we ask the European Commission to reconsider its proposed Recommendation to the RED and to significantly reduce its scope, in order to avoid contradicting the countries’ nature protection obligations.
