The impact of ‘foreign agent law’ on civic space and the enabling environment for sustainable development in Georgia

Briefing    |    18 October 2024

Download

Georgia’s ruling party has intensified its crackdown on civil society, independent media, and political opposition as the country approaches its October 2024 parliamentary elections. The passage of the ‘Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence’ in June 2024, alongside other repressive measures, has significantly restricted civic space and undermined Georgia’s progress towards European integration.

This briefing outlines the current political situation in Georgia, detailing the government’s authoritarian shift and its implications for governance, economic stability, and sustainable development. It highlights the responses from international partners, including the EU and the US, and provides recommendations for international financial institutions.
