Dariali hydropower plant project, Georgia

Publication  |  May 2, 2014

The Georgian company JSC Dariali Energy has requested a loan of up to USD 80 million from the EBRD for the 108 MW Dariali hydropower (HPP) project. The project involves the construction of a derivation-type HPP on the Tergi river in the municipality of Kazbegi. The project will divert water from the town of Stepatsminda towards the powerhouse close to the border with Russia, leaving eight kilometres of river without a sufficient amount of water.

NGO letter to EU institutions: Take immediate action to respond to the dieselgate scandal

Publication  |  November 9, 2015

The dieselgate scandal is symptomatic of a ‘better regulation’ agenda in favour of cutting compliance costs and replacing the role of the public regulator with corporate co- and self-regulation. More than 35 civil society organisations have signed this letter calling for immediate and transparent investigations; EU oversight in the process of type approval for motor vehicles; strengthened enforcement of environmental legislation at EU and Member State level; the suspension of fraudulent companies from the EU lobby register until it has been demonstrated that they comply with EU law.

Executive summary: The EU and energy in the Arab countries

Publication  |  November 17, 2015

This briefing (an executive summary of an upcoming report) looks at energy investments by the EU in the Southern Mediterranean region and the impacts on the social, economic and environmental rights of citizens and communities by highlighting the compliance of these activities with the values of democracy, human rights and economic development for Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. It also assesses the type of the investments that would be beneficial both for host countries as well as for the EU.

Delays in Almaty CHP-2 gas project open new opportunities for a rethink

Publication  |  May 29, 2024

Supported by the EBRD, the conversion of Almaty’s coal heat and power plant CHP-2 to gas has been seriously delayed. This opens an opportunity for a rethink: Why is the EBRD continuing to support this project instead of funding a clean and potentially cheaper type of heating?

Clean, green EU spending is possible – New map highlights European regional spending that works for environment and people

Press release  |  October 18, 2012

Visit http://www.wellspent.eu to see how European projects funded by Cohesion Policy are working for the environment, society and the economy. Brussels, October 18, 2012 – A new publication released today documenting regional spending during the 2007-2013 period highlights how in times of economic and environmental crisis, Cohesion Policy can guide investments that are sustainable, innovative and really benefit the public. CEE Bankwatch Network, Friends of the Earth Europe and WWF published today a map showing where European regional spending has triggered environmental protection and sustainable development – including public transport, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

EU’s flagship climate instrument used to subsidise coal in Central and Eastern Europe

Press release  |  April 26, 2016

The EU’s carbon market rules allow Central and Eastern European Member States to invest up to €12 billion in coal powered energy production. As representatives of the EU Member States are due to discuss the EU ETS this Wednesday, the new publication “Fossil fuel subsidies from Europe’s carbon market” adds momentum to the need to overhaul this policy.

Positives undermined: the EIB’s lending for renewable energies

Publication  |  May 21, 2005

This publication explores the EIB’s investments in renewable energy projects, focusing on financing through the intermediary banks via global loans. The EIB’s refusal to provide any exact information on the subject while referring to its disclosure policy, was a driving force behind the survey made by Bankwatch Network and FoEI between January and March 2005. They asked 386 financial intermediaries to provide a list of renewable energy projects financed through the EIB global loan credit line over the period 1999 to 2003. Sporadic reactions from the intermediaries resulted in no evidence about a concrete renewable energy project being financed from the EUR 300 million allocated by the EIB.

Real energy security is staring us in the face. Renewable energy case studies from South East Europe

Publication  |  December 18, 2007

The publication sets out to provide a quick snapshot of renewable energy projects in south-east Europe. With a host of fossil fuel and nuclear projects currently being proposed across the region, sustainable energy initiatives have it difficult to reach the general public. While international financial flows generally follow the bigger, easier-to-handle projects, unfortunately only small drops are adding up to create a renewable energy and energy efficiency future.

In the wake of ArcelorMittal – the global steel giant’s local impacts
