‘It is impossible for anyone to change anything in Svaneti, because it will be the destruction of Svaneti and the Svan people.’

Nazo is a sister of Mikheil Khergiani who pioneered alpinism in Georgia. In 1980s Nazo was a fierce opponent of the Khudoni dam which was to flood a community of 2.000 Svans in Khaishi. In the past decade, the Khudoni project was brought back to life by the Georgian administration seeking to exploit the Svaneti untapped waterpower. As many as 35 hydropower plants are now planned for Upper Svaneti. “Not a single new dam should be built in Svaneti. The plants will trigger more erosion and dislocate people” says Nazo.

Nazo is a sister of a famous alpinist Mihael Khergiani from Mestia.

Svaneti is threatened by massive hydropower developments

We are trying to prevent that and preserve the regions unique way of life.
