Anna is Bankwatch’s Ukraine Reconstruction Campaigner, working on green reconstruction and environmental safeguards in Ukraine’s recovery. Her work focuses on alternative sources of energy for communities, energy resilience, and the alignment of Ukraine’s energy policy and public investment management system with EU standards. Originally from Kyiv, she holds an MSc in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Central European University and is based in Bratislava.

A project financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in the Odessa region of Ukraine has this week been the scene of clashes between 300 police officers and villagers resisting the routing of high voltage power lines through their village. The EUR 25.8 million Odessa High Voltage Grid Upgrade project is being implemented by Ukraine’s national electricity company Ukrenergo in violation of agreements with the EBRD, the international public development bank and backer of the project.
The letter calls for President Mirow to ensure an inclusive debate about the banks role and priorities while the EBRD’s undertakes its Capital Resources Review 4 (CRR4). Bankwatch request that the bank consults external stakeholders about the review, and that background materials related to the process are publicly disclosed in a timely manner. As the EIB considers financing the Nabucco Gas Pipeline project, the letter requests the bank to take into account the serious human rights violations occurring in Turkmenistan, as exemplified by Mr. Zatokas case.
