A false start for wind energy in Uzbekistan?
Briefing | 1 December 2022
Uzbekistan plans to double the amount of renewable energy it produces by 2030 – a great step towards decarbonisation. Yet the new wind power plants that will be built as part of this – with financing from institutions like the European Investment Bank, International Finance Corporation and Asian Development Bank – might have unassessed impacts on biodiversity.
This report analyses the current environmental assessments for four wind projects planned to be built in Uzbekistan and adds new evidence from visits to the sites, meetings with the companies and local communities, and expert advise from environmental organisations. It finds that the environmental assessments and in some cases mitigation measures for the projects must be significantly improved to protect threatened species in the areas, and that much more can be done to make the projects beneficial for local communities.
