Romania’s coal phase-out by 2030: an unreachable goal?

Romania’s coal phase-out by 2030: an unreachable goal?

Briefing    |    14 February 2020

On 31 January 2020, the Ministry of Economy published the final version of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), a fundamental document that will define Romania’s ambitions in the field for the next decade. Although the targets for 2030 for renewable energy and energy efficiency are higher than those in the 2018 NECP version, they remain below the recommendations of the European Commission.

The document is unambitious because it ignores Romania’s enormous potential for green economy transition and the recently created funding opportunities for sustainable development, such as the European Green Deal.
