The Modernisation Fund in central and eastern Europe

December 13, 2022

This briefing gives insights into the Modernisation Fund, a funding programme to support 10 lower-income EU Member States in their transition to climate neutrality by modernising their energy systems and improving energy efficiency.

REPowerEU is a chance to prioritise renovating buildings in Latvia

November 30, 2022

Energy consumed in the residential sector accounts for up to 30 per cent of Latvia’s energy usage. Approximately 23,000 multi-apartment buildings need to be renovated, but only 1,600 buildings have been insulated since 2009, a renovation rate of 0.5 per year. Will Latvia seize the chance and use REPowerEU chapters for renovation?

Energy crunch underlines the urgency of overhauling Romania’s energy plans

November 3, 2022

As delegates are heading to the annual UN climate conference, rising energy costs expose the precarity of relying on fossil gas. The Romanian government should replace its grand plans for new gas infrastructure projects — which it seeks to finance with EU public money – with an acceleration of the sustainable energy transition.

Financial support for renewables in Latvia

October 28, 2022

This briefing provides an overview of public funding and financial instruments for renewable energy source deployment in Latvia that have either already been launched or are planned to be launched in 2022, as well as provides insights on planned programmes that could help finance more renewables in the coming years.

The solution to Romania’s energy poverty is decentralised, renewable energy

May 23, 2022

Over a third of Romania’s population is affected by energy poverty, but this can change with an integrated approach and targeted support.

Heated households based on heat pump technology claim it is a smart, clean and comfortable investment

November 24, 2021

When it comes to tackling the climate crisis, everyone knows we need more electricity from wind and solar. But despite their massive potential to help cut emissions and curb air pollution, heat pumps have not received the same attention.

Fact sheet on energy efficiency investment programmes in Romania

November 23, 2021

A successful transition to a decarbonised economy is carried out by prioritising investments in energy efficiency, one of the main pillars of the European Green Deal. Romania has committed to reduce its final energy consumption by 40.4 per cent and its

No renovation wave in sight across EU recovery plans in central and eastern Europe

July 26, 2021

In the national recovery and resilience plans, energy efficiency and building renovations can play a key role for Member States to achieve the required target of 37 per cent of expenditures related to climate. The potential to modernise buildings is the greatest in central and eastern Europe, where the building stock is particularly inefficient. But an assessment of eight national plans across the region finds uneven progress towards these aims. Christophe Jost of Bankwatch concludes that this is likely to hamper efforts to decarbonise the region’s building stock in line with the Renovation Wave´s ambitious objectives.

Central and Eastern Europe’s buildings renovation plans fall far short of 55% emissions cuts

Energy efficiency and renewables in buildings in national recovery and resilience plans

July 14, 2021

Investments in building renovations can significantly contribute to reaching the EU’s 2030 energy and climate objectives. The Recovery and Resilience Facility presents an opportunity to help meet those funding needs, given the 37 per cent climate targe
