Alexandru has been leading the Beyond Fossil Fuels secretariat work on coal and gas power plants since 2021, ensuring collaboration between 65+ civil society organisations across Europe on phasing out fossil fuels from the power sector. Previously, Alexandru has spent six years working as a coal campaigner for Bankwatch. Passionate about addressing the social impact of climate action, Alexandru led one of the first just transition campaigns in Central and Eastern Europe during his time with Bankwatch, and then coordinated the just transition campaign across seven countries, from 2017 until 2021. He has a BA in Political Science and a MSc in Environmental Engineering.

When Maroš Šefčovič, the Commission’s Vice President for the Energy Union visited Bucharest in October 2015 to discuss Romania’s role in the overhaul of Europe’s energy sector, his speech seemed promising at first. It focused on renewables, energy efficiency and research and innovation – all issues that are rarely on the Romanian public agenda. But eventually, much like the Commission’s assessment for Romania (pdf) that was presented during the visit, the message and its level of ambition felt more like much ado about nothing.
