Prague workshop debates the negative impacts of uranium mining in Namibia and the Czech Republic

A workshop organised in Prague by Calla and Bankwatch member group Centre for Transport and Environment (CDE) brought together experts from local governments, scientists, medical practitioners and active citizens. The workshop “Diagnosis: Uranium dreams and nightmares” offered the unique chance to learn about the uranium industry in Namibia from Bertchen Kohrs, president of EarthLife Namibia, who is working to protect local communities and the environment from the harmful impacts of uranium mining.
Ukraine’s zombie reactors at the Development Day in Slovakia

On October 14, the World Development Information Day, Bankwatch and our partners People in Peril joined an event in Bratislava of the Slovak Platform of development NGOs with stories, pictures and international cuisine. Students, journalists and politicians watched our photo-exhibition “Nuclear Ukraine”. We explained how “development can go wrong” and why the Ukraine’s ageing nuclear reactors require public engagement of citizens in the region. See images from the event below.

With sincerest condolences, Bankwatch member groups CDE and Hnutí Duha are organising a service to mourn the death of the Czech Republic’s responsibility for climate change. People are invited to a climate wake to grieve the loss of another piece of the Czech landscape and as well the country’s responsibility for climate change on Tuesday 6 October at 10:00 in front of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (Na Františku 32, Praha 1).
Conference: Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in Hungary

On September 16, Hungarian Bankwatch member group MTVSZ (National Society of Conservationists) co-organised the biggest conference on the Sustainable Development Goals in Hungary. Together with the HAND Association, MTVSZ prepared specific proposals for the Hungarian government that can help implement the SDGs in a way that looks beyond the treatment of symptoms and addresses the root causes of inequality, climate change, poverty, etc.

To live or profit? Video from a protest action in the Czech Republic

On July 17, protestors in northern Czech Republic held an action outside the home of Jan Dienstl, a coal magnate who is lobbying heavily to have the country’s limits on mining removed. The participants came from the summer camp of Bankwatch’s member group Hnuti Duha that took place in Horní Jiřetí, a small town which would be set for demolition if the plans of the mining companies to breach ecological mining limits succeeded.
Development days in Romania

As part of the Romania Development Camp and together with representatives from the EU, OECD and the development platform CONCORD, Bankwatchers discussed the incoherent priorities of the EU when it comes to human rights and development, focusing specifically on fossil fuel projects in Azerbaijan as a test case.
Development finance takes centre stage in Riga

In June, Latvian Green Movement co-organised the high-profile Riga International Roundtable Financing for Development: Role of EU Member States. Participants included policy makers, journalists, representatives of development finance institutions and civil society and academics. At the event, countries’ positions on and alternative solutions to development finance were complemented by a view on successes and challenges of development finance so far.

This collaborative map (coordinated by the Observatori del Deute en la Globalització) shows the other side of energy projects and gives a voice to the regions and communities affected by current and future energy infrastructures. These projects are slated for support from the European public funding via two schemes, the Projects of Common Interest and the European Fund for Strategic Investments. They risk redefining and privatising the meaning of common interest, overlooking the opinion of directly and indirectly affected regions.
