With nine EU member states now coal-free1 and 11 more planning to end electricity generation from coal by 2030, the coal phase out in the EU is well underway. 52 coal plants have closed in the EU since 2016, while the European Union has stepped up its commitment to climate change mitigation and has set out a path to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The EU is also committed to ensuring that its COVID-19 recovery package delivers on the ambition of its European Green Deal, helping Europe to lead the world in climate and environmental action.
