The EU’s Modernisation Fund has financed over EUR 2 billion worth of waste incineration projects in the Czech Republic and Poland. However, from January 2025, these projects will no longer be eligible for public financing due to the introduction of the ‘do no significant harm’ principle.

For this reason, Member States and public financing must align with EU principles and avoid investments that lock them into unsustainable practices like waste incineration.
