EIB halts loan for Budapest Airport expansion over breach of EU environmental law

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has halted the payment of a EUR 200 million loan to expand the Budapest Airport in Hungary because the authorities haven’t analyzed how the investment could contribute to air pollution, noise pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. According to CEE Bankwatch Network, the case represents a violation of EIB’s policy and EU environmental law.

EU bank freezes funding for major Budapest Airport expansion over sweeping violations of environmental norms

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has suspended the disbursement of a EUR 200 million loan intended to facilitate a dramatic increase in passenger turnover at Hungary’s main international airport following an investigation by the Bank’s Complaints Mechanism that found that no analysis had been done to assess the air pollution, noise pollution and greenhouse gas emissions that the development would generate, in breach of the Bank’s own policy as well as EU environmental law.

Paving over paradise

What were once iconic views of Georgia’s beautiful Khada Valley are slowly disappearing.  Now, when you drive up the damaged road towards a narrow, 12-kilometre-long gorge, also known as the ‘valley of 60 towers’, the first thing you see is no longer the famous tower of Iukho village. Position Paper on the Serbia Solid Waste National Programme

This position paper, prepared by the CEE Bankwatch Network and based on research conducted by Springloop Cooperative, U.A. and Bankwatch member group CEKOR, Serbia, expresses concern about the Serbia Solid Waste National Programme, a multi-site EUR 150 million project co-financed 50:50 by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the French Development Agency. The paper discusses the various risks associated with approving the project without first ensuring that detailed social and environmental assessments are carried out, and it calls on the Bank to condition the project on guarantees that the rights and livelihoods of the most vulnerable and marginalized affected people will be protected.
