On October 14, the World Development Information Day, Bankwatch and our partners People in Peril joined an event in Bratislava of the Slovak Platform of development NGOs with stories, pictures and international cuisine. Students, journalists and politicians watched our photo-exhibition “Nuclear Ukraine”. We explained how “development can go wrong” and why the Ukraine’s ageing nuclear reactors require public engagement of citizens in the region. See images from the event below.

It appears that before approving the European Investment Bank’s new climate strategy, the bank’s Board of Directors has removed a reference to the European Union’s long-term decarbonisation objectives as a guidance for the EIB’s climate action.

People are invited to a climate wake to grieve the loss of another piece of the Czech landscape and as well the country’s responsibility for climate change on Tuesday 6 October at 10:00 in front of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (Na Františku 32, Praha 1).

Major blow for Croatian coal plant as Crédit Agricole announces new coal power policy

Paris, France – Today’s publication of new criteria for coal-fired power plant financing by French bank Crédit Agricole suggests that the bank will not be able to finance the controversial €800 million Plomin C coal power plant in Croatia, believe campaign groups. The policy now rules out finance for coal power plants in high-income countries, which includes Croatia.

Following revelations about Volkswagen cheating in emissions tests and about the European Investment Bank’s substantial support for VW – including loans for research and development of cleaner engines, Bankwatch requested information on EIB loans to the car maker. Guest post: Italian mayors protest against the Trans Adriatic Pipeline

Local opposition in Italy to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is mounting. During a business event organised last week, a dozen mayors staged a protest against the government’s support for the project, who together with civil society and local authorities fear that the pipeline will destroy the environment and the safety of their communities. Instead they are demanding that EU drop the project.

The board of the European Investment Bank (EIB) on Tuesday approved a new climate lending strategy, which held the climate-focused portion of the bank’s total lending at 25% but aims to take climate considerations into account in all disbursements and focus on projects with more impact.
