Hydropower development in Georgia

Lengeri

November 3, 2017

Seemingly isolated and lacking attractions like museums, cafes or restaurants, Lengeri’s architecture is well preserved and there are a few guesthouses offering an all-inclusive accommodation. An excellent chance to enjoy Svan food and hospitality.

Chuberi

November 3, 2017

At least 10 kilometres upstream the Nenskra River there are still settlements that live from the abundance of the river shores.

Etseri

November 3, 2017

Etseri stretches over a valley with a view of some of the most important peaks in Svaneti. A small stream irrigates the town and divides it in two.

Khaishi

November 3, 2017

Up in the Khaishi village, there is a lively school with students from all the nearby settlements, an active monastery and many locals living from their pastures, forests and gardens.

Mestia

November 3, 2017

Mestia is and has been the historical starting point for alpine climbers and adventurers who have explored Svaneti’s peaks of over 5000 meters.

Pari

November 3, 2017

Somewhere on the main road a big colourful sign that reads ‘Svan Travel Agency’ points to a steep dirt road. These easy-to-hitchhike three kilometres lead to Pari.

Nenskra HPP: the concerns of worried locals fall on deaf ears of project developers

October 12, 2017

In an interview, a teacher from Chuberi in the Svaneti mountains gave us an impression of how the project developers of the planned Nenskra dam engage with locals.

Georgia’s highlanders against hydropower

September 20, 2017

As the Georgian government moves ahead with its plans for increasing the country’s hydropower capacity, local communities are being sidelined in the process of compensation payments.

Systematic shortcomings will deprive people affected by Georgian dam of compensation

September 11, 2017

An assessment of livelihoods of people to be affected by the Nenskra hydropower plant in Georgia is rigged with mistakes that will lead to significant losses for locals.

Failing local communities – the Land Assessment and Livelihoods Restoration Plan for the Nenskra dam

September 11, 2017

The Land Assessment and Livelihoods Restoration Plan for people to be affected by the Nenskra hydropower plant in Georgia is rigged with mistakes that will lead to significant losses for locals.
